This text, published
posthumously, falls in the period during which Lambert
occupied himself intensively with philosophical issues. Its writing was provoked by a Preisfrage
of the Berlin Academy (1761), viz. whether the metaphysical sciences
are capable of the same evidence as the mathematical sciences? Lambert
did not send in his contribution, other philosophers such as Immanuel
Kant and Mosses Mendelsohn did, Mendelsohn eventually winning the prize.
