Description:

Lambert's main philosophical work refers in its title to both Aristoteles's Organon and Francis Bacon's Novum Organum. Its subtitle, ideas on the study and denotation of true things and their difference from error and appearance, describes accurately its contents. The title also articulates the four parts of the Neues Organon: 1. Dianoiologie, the laws of thought; 2. Alethiologie, the doctrine of truth; 3. Semiotik, the doctrine of signs; 4. Phänomenologie, the doctrine of appearances.
The work clearly connects to Lambert's earlier philosophical manuscripts and to then current debates in philosophy on the nature of knowledge in the exact and not so exact sciences. Contrary to the manuscripts or contemporary philosophy, however, the Neues Organon contains a lot of practical tips, tools and strategies to arrive at truth or discern it from error and appearance. This is in accordance with its title Organon ("Werkzeug", instrument). Instances of such in the Neues Organon are a calculus of lines and letters to judge the truth of a logical syllogism (in Part I); strategies to avoid "Wortstreit" (logomachia, in Part III), or a calculus to compute the likelihood of statements (in Part IV).
The logical calculus and the appearance of the Neues Organon was announced in a letter Lambert wrote to Kästner and that was published in the GGA . A very extensive review was published by Moses Mendelsohn in the ADB.
