Analogous to the theory of light,
Lambert develops the concept of a ray of sound. Using this concept, he
develops a special form of trumpet that may be used to transmit sound
over a large distance. This instrument is called "porte-voix" in the
French original, in the German translation the word "Telephon" is used,
perhaps the earliest occurrence of this word in German or in any
language.
