This volume is the first
of three collections that contain essays on various topics in pure and
applied mathematics.
Part II on "Visirkunst", the art of measuring vessels, was conceived November 1759 and written down 1760.
Part III was conceived around April 1760 and written down August 1762. In the paper, Lambert studies all possible combinations of triangles on a sphere and analyzes how the relationships found may be useful fro trigonometric tables.
Part I and Part IV were conceived November 1759 and written down August 1762. In concept, they return to Marinoni's De Re Ichnographica, viz. on how to use the plane table and the "Augenmaaß" (eye measure) to measure distances. Lambert adds algebraic methods to calculate the distances and correct the errors involved in the observations. Part IV is Lambert's most explicit attempt at founding a theory of errors, announcing the birth of statistics.
